  • I wish I had better things to talk about.

Unfortunately, college is sort of the most pressing issue at present, so I really don't. However, I've been having awesome luck in the last 24 hours. Here's why:

21 hours ago- I had just got home from our first league debate competition (the case that I stayed up until 3 the night before writing was great, we won both debates handily against two long time rivals, this season will be great, the end) and was eating dinner when my phone rang. So I get up, take a look at it, and see that it's a 617 area code. I was talking to my mom at the time, told her about the strange source of the call, thought "Gee, that area code sounds familiar," and just decided that whoever it was could just leave a message.

Louie then decides to go through my phone and list off all the people I know that could be calling long distance, starting with the ex-boyfriend in Chicago. Suddenly, the area code clicked, and my reaction went something like this: "OH MY GOD THAT'S THE AREA CODE IN BOSTON BECAUSE MIT'S AREA CODE IS ONE AWAY FROM OURS OH MY GOD GIVE ME THE PHONE." And right then, the voice mail beeps.

So my mom, Louie, and I huddle around the phone on speaker and listen to a very nice 2 minute message from the sailing coach (one of them, at least) at MIT, letting me know that he was just getting back to me and he'd send an email with his cell phone number. All three of us just sit there in stunned silence (except for Louie, who is clearly too cool for that sort of thing, and instead decides to lean against the counter in stunned science). We then had a mini freak-out session ala the one I had had earlier, I went and checked my email, called him back, and we chatted for a little over 20 minutes about sailing at MIT. Long story short, I am an official recruit. YEAH ENGINEERS! It still hasn't sunk in. Yes, I know it won't help that much, especially at a school like MIT, but still. Sailing at MIT would be incredible.

4.5 hours ago- I was eating lunch up in the research room like I usually do (it's my 20 minutes to just clear my head and do nothing time in the day) and thought "Hey, I haven't check Wolverine Access in a while. Aren't the first round of decisions supposed to come out soon?," not really considering the possibility that mine might actually be up, considering my teacher recommendation only made it through the system 10 days ago. So I log on, and am greeted with the option to "View Decision." Well, what the heck. And, sitting alone in a high school class room eating my lunch, I got my first college decision.

Admittedly, a little anti-climatic. However, I officially have a home next fall. For those of you keeping track at home, the graph of where-Shannon-will-end-up-next-year now is as follows (school rankings have changed, and now I have a 100% chance of getting into U of M. hooray):

And stay tuned for more nerdy statistics in mid-December! Less than a month and a half until EA MIT decisions come out. (By the way, in case you were wondering why I have such a ridiculously high chance of ending up at MIT even when my chances of getting in are so low, it's because MIT wins in any possible combination. Add those little probabilities up and you get a whole bunch)

I somehow managed to finish my entire UChicago application in one night and submit that for EA, too. As in, I submitted it at 4:55 AM on November 2 EST, which was still a few hours before the deadline in Alofi, Niue. Yay loopholes. I really did like how my essays turned out, too. I'd say my main essay for UChicago ties my main essay for the other schools in terms of favorite, but the two are admittedly not that comparable.

I'll start updating more now that EA's out of the way. Right now, though I'm off to my first day of official work at PetSmart. Let's hope it goes as well as the last 24 hours.
