  • Senior Year = Paradox.

Senior year is insane. Crazy, easy, insanely difficult, stressful, relaxing, and ridiculous, all piled on one another.

I don't think I've actually done homework at home in a few weeks, nor have I studied for a single test all year. I did, however, spend at least 20 hours just perfecting my Siemen's paper (AHH OCTOBER 19TH!!!!shift+1!) and am currently devoting way too much time to debate. And college stuff in general. I do like my one essay so far, though. I was sitting in my chair, looking out the window, and thought, "Gee, what's unique about me?" And the first thing that popped into my head was "I am terrified of closed shower curtains."

So, I wrote about it. It is an absolutely ridiculous, out there essay, and it's completely something I would write.

My ear also itches right now.

Anyways, so that was my recent crowning achievement. Oh, I also got a job- I'm a cashier at PetsMart. Good stuff. Basically, I get paid $7.15$7.50 an hour to tell people to have a nice day and do odd jobs around the store. Not bad at all. Way better than babysitting.

And that actually leads to a good story (this entry has no focus whatsoever). All right, so this took place at least three years or so ago while I was babysitting for one of my neighbors. At the time, they had a 2 year-old boy and a 1-year-old girl. The older kid, Bryce, was a terror. I kid you not, and these people, though both doctors, didn't pay me nearly enough to put up with him (actually, looking back, the pay sucked. I could have been better paid pushing carts at Meijer).

Anyways, so it was about time for them to be put to bed, and Bryce decides to strip off his clothes and diaper and go completely naked. Not a problem. This I could deal with. Then the younger one, Lara, decides to do the same. Again, I can deal with naked kids. Not a big deal.

The next five minutes, though, are nightmarish. Bryce goes running off and getting into trouble, so I had to chase after him and leave Lara to play with her toys. I come back and find Lara crying. Thinking I'm a bad person and somehow let her hurt herself, I pick her up to comfort her, only to find that she's pooped all over the floor.

Well, that made for an early bedtime.

So I get back downstairs, and I have no idea what to do. This woman has no cleaning supplies in her house. I know she has a house cleaner, but honestly, doesn't she at least have to have Woolite or SOMETHING somewhere? Apparently not. I end up using something I find under a sink, and after carefully removing the poop start scrubbing away. Sure enough, the thing looks as good as new ("Gee! It's lightening up!"), and I decided not to mention it when they get home.

Now, let me also tell you that this woman is a nervous wreck. Within the last week, she has called me twice asking me to babysit within 45 minutes of her calling me. She also looks like she's constantly about to break down sobbing, and she's one of those women that have their entire household perfectly dictated over yet in total chaos (if that makes sense).

Anyways, so she calls me the next day, panicked, asking if Bryce got into the bleach. Of course not, I tell her. I had an eye on him the whole time. Well, there's a big white spot on the carpet downstairs, she tells me, and my lying side kicks into overdrive. I make up some story about spilt apple juice and me being unable to find cleaning supplies and embarrassed to tell her about it (the best lies have elements of truth). Relieved that her devil child had not, in fact, split bleach, she tells me that it's fine and that the carpet has a warranty or something on it. So it was all good, but I have not babysat for them since.

And that's my story, and she will never know. (Uh, if you're reading this, hi, Dr. Dillman...)

I usually try to tie in the beginning of the entry with the end, but this doesn't really work. I don't really even have a moral to the story besides lying is good. Which doesn't really count.

    So, uh, the end.

    *stalk* Fun post.

Good luck with Siemens! And while we're on the topic - you should also look into Intel STS. One of the biggest regrets I have from senior year is that I didn't know about Intel STS until the deadline had passed. My research teacher thought the competition involved too much paperwork, so he conveniently "forgot" to tell the class about it. :o
